William White Bell, a Civil Servant from Paisley, enlisted into the Armed Forces on 12 April 1939, later volunteering for the commandos. Lance Corporal Bell, No.2 Commando 6 Troop, was reported missing 28 March 1942 during Operation Chariot at St. Nazaire, subsequently confirmed prisoner of war. Embarked for the raid on motor launch ML 192.
