Sergeant Nelson Smallbone, 6 troop, died 11 March 1945 during operations in Italy. Son of Nelson W. F. and Lucie M. L. Smallbone, of Streatham, London [1][5].
Nelson Arthur Michel Smallbone was educated at Telferscot Road School in Streatham where he played cricket and football. He also played football for Corpus Christi Church, Brixton Hill, and was a member of the Church Youth Club [2].
Enlisted January 1940 later volunteering for the Commandos. Served in No.2 Commando 6 Troop from at least June 1941. Represented No.2 Commando at Boxing and Football [2][5].
Wounded 3 September 1943 during operations in Italy [3]. Mentioned in Despatches for gallant and distinguished service in the Field announced in Gazettes the month before he died [4].
