Frederick Wilkes enlisted into the Liverpool Scottish 2nd Bn., in May 1939. Volunteered for Special Service in April 1940 and posted No.4 Independent Company. Attached to 5 Troop of No.2 Commando after its formation in February 1941.Embarked on HMS Campbeltown for Operation Chariot, the raid at St Nazaire 28 March 1942. Wounded and prisoner of war.
