VI Commando were billeted in Dumbarton and used to climb Dumbarton Rock or Brucehill cliff on the banks of the River Clyde each morning for training. Some met women there and when the war ended at least nine came back to Dumbarton and settled there. They were: My father from Birmingham, Sgt Evan William (Taffy) Eyles, Sgt Arthur Arnold, Pte Sidney Gath from Manchester, Pte John Maurice (Jack) Kay from London, Pte Reggie Barrett, Pte Charlie Martin from Southampton or thereabouts, Pte Alex Blasby, Pte Stan Wall from Liverpool."
