William Charles Fry, a probationary Police Constable residing in Kingsdown, Bristol, enlisted into the Armed Forces on 23 July 1942 after volunteering for commando service. He joined the 2nd Police Intake at the Commando Depot (Commando Basic Training Centre), Achnacarry, and was subsequently attached to No.3 Commando. Private Fry was reported missing 14 July 1943, later confirmed a prisoner of war, during operations at Agnone, Sicily, and the Bridge at Malati (3 Commando Bridge).
