Robert Darragh, an apprentice Sheet Metal Worker, enlisted in the Royal Marines September 1942 later joining 41RM Commando. He was captured on 11 September 1943 at Salerno, Italy, and was a prisoner of war until the end of hostilities. During that time he suffered numerous bouts of malaria requiring over 10 periods in hospital. On return to the UK he was living in Sydenham.
