Lance Corporal John Thwaytes, R.A.M.C. attached to 41RM Commando, was awarded the Military Medal in recognition of gallant and distinguished service in Normandy.

This NCO throughout the first two days displayed the greatest determination and devotion to duty in reaching and treating numerous wounded. His work often under heavy mortar fire has been of the highest order and his efforts contributed largely to the successful evacuation of many casualties.
