James Henry Stephens, a Labourer from London, enlisted into the Royal Marines 1 May 1941. In February 1942 he volunteered for the first Royal Marine Commando unit to be formed. Known at the time simply as the Royal Marine Commando before being re-designated RM Commando 'A', and finally 40RM Commando. Marine Stephens was captured 19 August 1942 during operations at Dieppe, France. Liberated 1945. Address at time 8 Stanbridge Mansions, Putney, London SW15.
