Harry George Robert Hardy enlisted into the Royal Marines aged 18 on 4 March 1940 later joining 41RM Commando sometime after its formation in 1942. Corporal Hardy was wounded and a prisoner of war 17 September 1943 during operations at Salerno, Italy. He spent 2 months recovering in hospital at Cortina, Italy, before being moved to a prison camp.
