Maj Gordon Pollard MC MM
Sergeant Pollard,169 Light Anti-Aircraft Battery Royal Artillery, was awarded the Military Medal for gallant and distinguished service in the Middle East (Egypt and Libya) during the period May, 1942 to October, 1942. On 16 May 1943 he was commissioned Second Lieutenant. Subsequently volunteered for the commandos and was posted to No.3 Commando remaining with them for the remainder of the war. Final rank attained in the Commandos was Major.
Awarded the Military Cross for gallant and distinguished service at Bova Marina, Termoli.
Awarded a bar to the Military Cross for gallant and distinguished service at Chateau d'Amfreville, Normandy.
Mentioned in Despatches in recognition of gallant and distinguished service in North-West Europe.
Post war Gordon Pollard remained in military service and in 1960 whilst Lieut. Colonel in the Parachute Corps TA he was awarded the 1st Clasp to the Territorial Efficiency Decoration. Later promoted Colonel and in 1960 was appointed OBE in Her Majesty the Queen's birthday honours.
Gordon Pollard then became the editor of the South Yorkshire edition of the Yorkshire Evening Post. In July 1963 he was involved in road traffic collision and subsequently died from his injuries the following year after a long period in a coma in hospital.
