Derek George James, a Clerk from Bristol, enlisted into the Royal Artillery on 23 March 1939. He volunteered for the commandos and on 10 September 1941 joined No.3 Commando. 
Gunner James was reported missing, later confirmed prisoner of war, 19 August 1942 during operations at Dieppe, France. He made four attempts at escape, the last in April 1945 when he made his way to American lines.
