Lance Corporal Richard Turner, aged 25, was wounded 4 August 1944 during operations in France. Evacuated back to the UK and to a hospital in Durham [1][2a][3].
Richard Kirkley Turner lived in North Shields all his life and was educated at Queen Victoria School. He volunteered for the Commandos in 1942 after 3 years service in the Tynemouth Police Force. In 1939 he was employed as Police Constable no.85 residing at the Police Billet, Albion Assembly Rooms, Norfolk Street, Tynemouth. In March 1945 he was reinstated as a Police Officer in civil employment whilst recuperating [2][2a][3].
In August 1943 he had taken part in early beach reconnaisance at Bova Marina, Italy, before the allied invasion [4].
