Alistair Carpendale McEwan Savage enlisted in August 1934. Volunteered for the commandos in 1940 joining No.7 Commando. Departed for the Middle East with No.7 Commando forming 'A' Bn., Layforce. Captain Savage was reported wounded and missing 2 June 1941 in Crete, later confirmed a prisoner of war. He was treated at Kokinia Hospital in Athens for four weeks, transferred to Averov Prison, then Larissa Concentration Camp, Greece. Moved to camps in Italy at the end of 1942. Escaped twice but was recaptured on both occasions. Also made a 3rd unsuccessful escape attempt. Transported to Germany [1][2][2a][3].
