Joseph John Riley, a Grocers's Assistant from Preston, enlisted into the Royal Marines on 24 September 1941. He joined 47RM Commando sometime after its formation in August 1943. Marine Riley was captured and a prisoner of war on 7 June 1944 during operations at Port-en-Bessin, Normandy.
