Horace Dean, a Mail Van Driver from Ripley, enlisted into the Armed Forces in February 1940 later volunteering for the commandos. He joined No.7 Commando embarking with them for the Middle East forming 'A' Battalion of Layforce. Private Dean was reported missing 2 June 1941 during operations at Crete, subsequently confirmed a prisoner of war.
