On 24 February 1942 Lieutenant Edward William Ecrepont joined the RM Commando from the 9th RM Battalion. Captain Ecrepont was awarded the Military Cross for leadership, gallantry and devotion to duty on 22 January 1944. After the crossing of the River Gargliano, Italy, he led 2 Troops in seizing the essential feature to the North of Mount Castellucio and successfully held it for 36 hours until relieved despite repeated counter-attacks.
