Award Recommendation
On 6th June 1944 during the landing near Ouistreham Corporal Scanlon tended numerous casualties under heavy mortar and shell fire bringing them to safety and saving some from drowning. During the subsequent assault on the Battery at Ouistreham when the area came under shell fire Corporal Scanlon moved about without regard for his own safety bringing in six wounded men to a shelter where he tended them for two hours until he was able to take them out. He brought them to the regimental aid post and then to the beach although heavily sniped on the way and continued to look after wounded in the beach area until the morning of 7th June 1944 when he rejoined his unit at Hauger. Corporal Scanlon behaved according to the highest traditions of his service and his complete disregard of self provoked the admiration of all officers and men. This high standard has been maintained throughout the campaign. [Recommended for DCM awarded MM].
