Sergeant Basil Aylett from Hanwell, West London, was awarded the Military Medal for gallant and distinguished service in operations with 40RM Commando at Termoli, Italy [1][1a][1b].
Recommendation
Termoli 3rd October 1943
Sgt. Aylett was acting as T.S.M. to 'A' Troop whose objective was the port and eastern end of Termoli. A Light Machine Gun post was located in a house which was holding up the advance of the troop. His Troop Commander had just been shot in the head from the position. In spite of a bullet wound through his arm causing great pain Sgt Aylett proceeded clear of the house with a small party and killed two Germans in the position. Later he collapsed and was taken to the regimental aid post. Sgt Aylett displayed great courage and disregard for his own personal safety throughout this action [Recommended for DCM, awarded MM] [1a].
- Upon recovery from wounds he was posted to 45RM Commando and promoted T.S.M. of 'B' Troop. In this new role he received a Mention in Despatches for good service with the 21st Army Group [2][3].
