Private Joseph Smith, 'X' Troop, was a refugee from Czechoslavakia (Sudeten German) born Josef KUGLER. SOE trained. Reported missing 19 August 1942 during operations at Dieppe, later found to be a prisoner of war. He escaped several times from working camps only to be re-captured after short spells of freedom on each occasion.
