John Edward T. Maynard No.8 Commando
Corporal John Maynard died during operations in Tobruk (Cyrenaica Libya) whilst part of a detachment from No 8 Commando ('B' Bn. Layforce) assigned to the garrison.
John Edward Trestrail Maynard was the only son of Percy Castell Maynard and Mary Elizabeth Maynard, of Redruth, Cornwall. He had two sisters Grace and Mary. John was a well known Redruth Rugby footballer and studied at Camborne School of Mines before holding a mining appointment in West Africa. On 17 August 1939 he was awarded the Royal Humane Society's Testimonial in Vellum for Saving Life at Sea for his assistance in the attempted rescue of two men at Porthtowan. Following the outbreak of war John joined the D.C.L.I.  He volunteered for Special Service in 1940 and deployed with No.8 Commando for the Middle East departing from the UK on 31 January 1941 as part of Layforce.
