Educated Tewkesbury Grammar School. Joined the Royal Marines aged 17. Deployed to Japan from Singapore for operations with 41 Independent Commando RM in Korea aged 19. Remained in service after the Korean War. In 1971 he was RSM of 45 Commando RM and later RSM at Deal. After he left the Corps he became Divisional Sergeant Major, The Queen's Bodyguard of the Yeomen of the Guard. Awarded the Royal Victorian Medal (Silver).
