George Carr, a Press Photographer from Darlington, enlisted into the Armed Forces on 24 August 1939 later volunteering for special service and attached to No.7 Commando. Deployed overseas for service in the Middle East with No.7 Commando forming 'A' Battalion of Layforce. Signalman Carr was reported missing later confirmed prisoner of war 20 April 1941 during operations at Bardia (Operation Addition). In September 1943 after Italy capitulated he and others attempted to make their way to allied lines via the mountains but were captured by German parachute troops.
