Harold Alexander Watson from Essex enlisted into the Armed Forces on 7 August 1939, civil occupation Machinist. He later volunteered for commando service. Gunner Watson served in No.12 Commando and No.6 Commando. He was reported missing on 7 June 1944 during operations with No.6 Commando at Sallenelles, France, before being confirmed as a prisoner of war. During captivity he escaped and attempted to make his way to Russian lines but was forced to surrender due to the intense cold and no food for three days [1][2][3].
He remained in the Army post war finally retiring after 33 years military service and taking over as the House Manager of the British Army Golf Club at Sennelager in Germany. Member of the Commando Association [4].
