Norman Smethurst worked as a Reeler in the Paper Manufacuring Industry before enlisting on 7 January 1943. Volunteered for Special Service and attached to No.9 Commando 2 troop. Overseas active service included Italy and Greece. To Reserve List Class 'B' Release 1946. Post war member of the Commando Association.
